I Turned 10!

Welcome to term 4! As you all know we are still in lockdown. Our first class meet was today. The teachers assigned us all to make a blog post about what we did in the holidays. So I said 'I turned 10!' Here's what I did.

For my birthday we got a Llama cake. On it said 'Llamas are cool!' We ate a lot of cake, and you will be happy that we ate it over three days, not one. The day before my birthday, we shared it with my grandparents. On my birthday, we shared it with my friend. And the day after my birthday, we ate it ourselves. 

I got my "llama"* from my parents on the morning of my birthday. I didn't know what a "llama" was before I unwraped it. You see, a "llama" is not a llama. Very confusing. * The "llama" was just a dad joke. It is actually a Lego Hotel.

In the moring I met Anna, who has the same birthday as me, in a little reserve near her house. It is an easy walk to get there. Anyway, I gave her a present and she gave me one too. I gave her a small lego set and she gave me a water-proof swimming bag and some double-sided highlighters. We played around and I went onto her front lawn for a while.

In the afternoon we went to the park to meet up with my friend and her mum. We brought the cake with us because, why not? We met at Potters Park in the band rotunda. We ate cake, I got another birthday present, and my friend and I played on the playground. Then it started to rain. So we gathered up our stuff, said goodbye, and went home. On the way home mum had to pick up the wine she ordered a couple of days before.

My Mum cut my hair! To do this well, we Facetime called my hairdresser to get tips. She cut it to just below my shoulders. There was a lot of hair on the floor when we had finished. I looked like a whole new me. 

In the evening mum cooked my favourite dish. Pork belly with crackling. It was in the oven for 4 1/2 hours and it tasted delicious, as always. On the side, was some cole slaw and mashed kumara. After dinner we watched my choice of TV. I only got to choose an episode of something, which really isn't fair because it was my birthday and I shound have been able to stay up late.

Create a Planet writing

Annoyingly we are still in lockdown. Somehow I kind of hope we stay like this for a little longer. I think my wish will come true, because I don't think we are going into level 2 anytime soon. Anyway, my favourite peice of work this week would probably be Monday's writing task. We had to get a piece of baking paper and fold it in half lengthways. Then we had to unfold it and on one side starting in the middle, write our first name in linked writing. After that we had to fold it in half again and trace our name on the other side. We had to colour in our name so that it looked at least a bit like an alien. When we were done with our alien we had to write a description of the planet it lived on. Here is my description.

My alien lives on planets Zorg. Planet Zorg has two sides, one that is steaming hot and another that has salt storms and snow. To get on to this planet you have to land a rover from over 1 million miles away because of the planet's gravitational force. The population here is low and there is only about 500 aliens on this planet. The aliens that live here are all the same so the only things unique about this place are the plants. There are many plants here and they are all different. Some of them even look like flip-flops. This planet is famous for its bubbly hot springs and their warm hot chocolates. If you came across this planet looking for resources, you would find a lot of mines inside the Snowy Mountains. Inside these mines there is a lot of silver and iron to collect. Zorg has their very own mining team to help you get all the silver and iron you need. Zorg population use little buggies to get around the planet easily. If you were to get to planet Zorg you would have to travel 1 light year (9.5 trillion km) away!

Paralympian DLOs!

This week the Teachers assigned us some work on making a DLO about a chosen Paralympian. I did my one about Jayne Craike. As soon as we had all the information we needed to make it we would put it on a new google slideshow, or a book in Book Creator. As I'm sure you will know, we are in lockdown. Again. Each individual class has their google meet to catch up everyday. On Wednesday and Friday the whole syndicate has a Google meet together. On Fridays, as usual, we give out certificates like at the assemblies back at school. My favourite tasks are the extra ones because we get to make forts with pillows and do cooking. More Olympics!

This is more facts about the Olympic Games!

Did you know that Lisa Carrington, the Maori NZ Canoer, has won THREE GOLD medals so far in the canoe sprint! So far we have got 7 GOLD, 6 SILVER, and 6 BRONZE medals. The Maori name for the Olympics is Taumahekeheke. 

Each classroom has their own medal tally and they each have different ways of marking it. Hauraki colours in the circles with black marker and writes what sport we won it for. Waitemata colours in the circles with the relevant colours but does not write the sport. Manukau colours in the circles with black marker and also does not write the sport.

Olympic Sport Study!

The Olympic Games in Tokyo started last Friday night (23rd July) when the Olympic flag came into the stadium and the Olympic flames were set alight. This week we have been, and are still working on, our research on one of the sports in the Olympics. This was part of our inquiry work. We were also lucky enough that the Teachers let us watch the Olympic games whilst doing our work! Before we could do the research on a sport we had to finish another slideshow on the logos for every single sport in the Olympic games this year. I chose artistic gymnastics because it is basicly ballet and gymnastics together and I have done both before! Then we could start our sport study. We had to include; 

• A Description of the Sport

• Country it started in - Map / Continent

• Basic History of the sport

• Countries the sport is popular in

• Number of countries involved

• Well known athletes and or teams 

• How long it has been in the Olympic Games 

• How it has changed over time

• How it has been affected by Covid-19

• Other Interesting facts

• Reflection and Summary

Matariki DLOs!

Over the last few weeks of Matariki, Nuanua (my reading class) have been working on a Matariki DLO. We are allowed to make the DLO on book creator, google drawings, or google slideshows. For my one I chose google drawings. Here it is!

How to play Caber Toss! (procedural writing)

Through the last couple of weeks Te Waka Ako has been doing procedural texts on how to play cultural games. I wrote one on how to play caber toss. 'Caber' is the Scottish way of saying 'big log'. Caber toss is a game from the Highland games in Scotland. I learnt that traditional cabers are supposed to be 19 feet and 6 inches tall! That's like 6 metres of really heavy wood. Wow! I think I did really well on my procedure on Caber toss. Here it is!

Toolkits day!

WOO HOO!!!!!

On Friday last week the Senior and Middle school hosted their very own Student Led Toolkits. The Teachers had us write down where we where we were going, when we were doing it, and what we were doing, all on a piece of paper the day before the toolkits. No.1 I had drones, no.2 I had Word Art, no.3 I had Makey Makey. They were all so fun! Let me tell you about the activities.

Firstly I went to the hall where I was going to do drones. Once I sat down I saw my friend from the Middle school come through the door. Her name is Ella. The students who were running the drones told us how to use them. They demonstrated how it worked and then the crashed the drone on the carpet. Everyone started laughing. The instructors tried to get everyone sorted. It didn't work. Pretty much none of the drones were charged enough to work. We could hear the sphero people on the other side of the hall. Miss Daly said "if the drones don't work then go and play with the spheros". Ella and I started paying with the sphero inside and then Miss Daly said we can take them outside onto the court. So we did. I controlled while Ella chased after the sphero at full speed. It was so much fun!

Secondly I went to Waitemata to do Word Art. I already kind of knew how it worked but I wasn't sure. One of the instructors was my best friend and the other I didn't know very well. They led everyone through the instructions step by step so that we can all do it together. There are pictures at the end of this post if you would like to see what I made.

Finally I walked over to Kaiwhare to find Anna standing at the door waiting for me. We sat down on the mat and the instructors told us what Makey Makey is. When they had finished telling us about it me and Anna were buddies so I sat down and I set up by Chromebook while Anna went to get some playdough and LEGO and tin foil. Obviously she also got the Makey Makey kit. We connected the usb cable to the Chromebook and the other end to side of the panel. Then we clipped on the green alligator cable to the bottom of the panel. After that we clipped and all the other alligator cables to the different holes. All the other ends of the cables got put into either playdough or LEGO wraped in tin foil. Once we had it all set up I put my finger on the metal bit of the green alligator cable that was connected to the bottom of the panel and then pressed with my other hand on the LEGO wraped in tin foil and then the playdough.

Orienteering Zones Practice

 This term Ms Sands has got together a group of the people who wanted to do Orienteering. I was one of them. The first meeting we had we talked about all the things on the map. The next time we met up we saw that Ms Sands had set up the pegs in a figure eight. We got given a sheet then we had to clip the sheet where the letters matched. Then a few weeks later we got together and we got timed and there was an actual course where we had to clip 20 pegs. Last week we found out that the race was the Tuesday after! Last weekend I found out that my team was going to be racing against my friend's team from another team!

In class we got into buddies and we made an Orienteering map course. We opened a google drawing which had a map of the school and we had to make an Orienteering course on it. We had to put on the arrows, circles, and numbers. This is what I mean.

Fortune tellers with Miss McGrath

Today the Yr 6s were leaving us to go to Spark Arena! We (Yr 5s) were left here at school with Miss McGrath. YAY! not that I don't like the other teachers but, YAY!

Firstly she took the roll. Then she talked about the survey we did last term. My legs were getting sore because we had been sitting on the carpet too long. Once we had talked a bit about wellbeing Miss McGrath said we were going to make fortune tellers. I was really exited when I heard this. Fortune tellers are pieces of card or paper folded in a way to make a cool way of telling you things. We made the fortune tellers to give each other compliments. We could make it for ourselves or for others.

Here is how to make a fortune teller: 

*Firstly fold the corner of your paper to the corner opisite. Now unfold it. Then do the same with the other corner. 

*After that turn your paper so it looks like a square. Then fold the top to the bottom. Unfold the paper. Turn the paper 90 degrees clockwise and do the same as you did before. 

*Then you fold each corner to the middle, turn the paper over and fold the corners over to the middle again.

*Turn the paper over.

*Now, this is the tricky part. If you need help, ask for help. You have to push up in the middle from underneath and push up the flaps at the top, put your fingers under the flaps and push up with your fingers. 

Now it's time to get out your pen (or pencil).

*On the outside of the paper you put on four different colours around it. 

*Now open it up and write 8 different numbers, preferably not over 15.

* Then unfold it again and under the numbers you wrtite positive things you will say to yourself or to others.

Swimming at Cameron pools!

Since week 1 of this term our class has been swimming at Cameron pools on Tuesday and Thursday. My teacher is Brittany, and she is really nice. Usually we start with our float board and have our arms at the top of the board with our head up and swim to the end of the pool. After that we have our hands at the bottom and our head down swimming all the way to the end of the pool. We do heaps of other swimming styles and eventually we got to about 5 minutes until we hop out and get changed. So Brittany gives us a different kind of swimming. On Thursday in week two Brittany told us to do 5 arm strokes and then a roly poly. (A roly poly is a flip in the water). I really enjoy doing the roly polys at the end of the lesson.

"a day in the trenches" (a day under the strings of wool)

When I go to school it started raining, but we couldn't get inside because the teachers had locked us out!, They had also put down the blinds so we could not see inside. After awhile Miss Daly came outside and let us in. It was dark. In Waitemata and Hauraki there were strings everywhere, and they were up to my hips!, all the teachers were wearing black clothes and had war face paint on. We sat down murmuring about what was going on. Then the crazy teachers shushed us and told us the rules. Then we grabbed our art books and crawled under to find a place to do our work. We found a place and sat down. Once the test started Mrs Jones put up a speaker and played really loud bomb sounds to distract us from the test. I think that I did better with bomb noises than I do without. The teachers motto of the day was probably "You put your head up, i'll shoot you!".

After awhile it was play time and it was raining so I had to go be a wet day monitor. But then the bell rang and we went back to the trenches to do our writing. Ms Sands told us the story and we had to draw pictures that explained the word she said. Then we did some acrostic poems, I did 5. 

We had heaps of fun!

The Tsunami warning

Last Friday there was a tsunami, well the alarm went off just in case but the tsunami didn't actually happen. When I was video calling Paige on my mum's phone, the phone went 'meep, meep, meep'. I had no idea what was happening! I was glad that me and my family were in Auckland so we did not have to evacuate. Today in school we did a brainstorm about what we would need in an emergency pack. Before we made our brainstorm Ms Sands told us the story of the tsunami. She was near it but up high. All the people from below came up their driveway. The people from the hospital came in a bus. One lady was very sick and had to come into Ms Sands's house, but she was way to sick and sadly she passed away.at about four o'clock there was about 70 people between the two houses, inside and out.

In an emergency pack you will need; non-perishible food - muesli bars, crackers, nuts, tins. you'll also need batteries and torch, bug repellent, phone, portable chargers, radio, toilet paper, umbrella, water, medicine, first aid kits, and if you have a pet then you should bring them. All that needs to be packed and ready, also easy to grab in an emergency.

Scrathing Space

Last week Mr Hing Windsor's flat mate, Ella came in and tought us how to make our scratch art.

Firstly we had to have a brown piece of cardboard and colour it in with pastel patterns. Before we put on the black paint we had to design our scratch. After that we got our rollers and rolled on the black paint. one thing to remember once you have put the black paint on is to do the scratch straight away when it's still wet. Here is a picture of my art:

My one turned out pretty well. 

Next time I think I will put in more designs.

LEGO workshop!

 On the 18th of November my class walked over to the hall to have heaps of fun doing LEGO. There were six tables with lego on them to make creations that might be able to go on the display table. 

The first table I went to was the space station creations. We got to make our on 'getting ready in space' area. the in about 5 minutes my group rotated to the stars table. Here, we got to create our own LEGO star! My one looked really cool.

Paige and Dustine's LEGO creations were also super amazing (they were in my team).  After those two tables we got to choose which table we went to. Paige and I went to the landscape table where we carryed on on of the others creations. we made a bridge and a tree and even more!

I really enjoyed it and I hope others did to.

Production Dance

Our school, Waikowhai Primary has a production that we perform every two years. On the first week of November we held our five performances of Jasmine and Aladdin at Waikowhai Intermediate. All the classes had an item that they would perform. Our song was called Wipe Out. 

My class was lining up and getting ready to go up on stage. I felt nervous and exited at the same time. Then we started moving, here we go! As I walked up the steps I looked at all the people watching me. The music started and everyone started to cheer. We were all dancing like crazy. When the song stopped we posed with our feet apart and hands by our sides. I said in my head "I'm glad thats over" but also I felt proud. Then we bowed and walked off the stage.

The Great Athletics Day

On the 27th of October the whole school had the amazing, the wonderful... Athletics day! We rotated around in groups. I was in the 8 year old girls group, even though I’m nine. They count it by how old you were on the 1st of October. My group rotated together for 10 activities. Some of them we didn’t do because there were 14 activities altogether. That means there were four activities we didn't do because we ran out of time.

My group started at high jump and then rotated round to the hurdles and so on. My favourite activity was the team building with Mr Hing-Windsor, even though we only got one quarter of the way through the game. I don't normally like Athletics day very much but this one was pretty good. Here's a photo of me in the sprints.
